Genesis 32:26 Then he said, “Let me go, for the day has broken.” But Jacob said, “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” (ESV)
The last story ended with Jacob and Esau back together again. But before they returned to each other, they lived apart for twenty years. And twenty years is a long time. And a lot happened. Jacob had left his home, his family, his loving mother and father. And he had to find a new place to live and a new way to survive.
Imagine that for a second. Imagine running away from home, walking out the front door, and down the street. What on earth would you do? Where would you go? How would you get food to eat or a bed to sleep on?
Jacob was on his own. And while it might seem daunting to us, he was used to doing hard things because he’d grown up wrestling against his bigger, stronger brother. So he wasn’t just used to wrestling, he was used to losing. He’d lost so many times that failure didn’t scare him anymore.
