Leviticus 26:11-12 I’ll set up my residence in your neighborhood; I won’t avoid or shun you; I’ll stroll through your streets. I’ll be your God; you’ll be my people. (MSG)

The people were camping down in a valley. And God was leading them from up on top of a mountain. And so whenever the people had questions or needed help or directions from God, Moses had to climb all the way up the mountain to talk with God, and then all the way back down to tell the people what God had said. And he hoped the people didn’t have follow-up questions, because climbing a mountain is very hard work.

And then one day God asked Moses to do something most unexpected. He wanted the family of Jacob to set up a special tent so that God could come down out of the mountain and live with the people in the valley. The tent was going to be called “tabernacle.” This was great news for Moses’ knees. But while having God move into town sounded exciting, it also felt a little scary.
