You no doubt remember from the last story how the family of Jacob had become slaves to the Pharaoh. And they worked really hard because the Egyptians made them work really hard. Because the Egyptians were angry. And they thought that if they made the family of Jacob work really hard, and pushed them around, and beat them up, that it would make things better. That it would somehow make up for all the things they’d lost when they sold everything to Joseph for food. But that is not how the world works. Evil is not made right with more evil. Evil always creates problems.
And here was the Egyptians’ problem: people don’t want to be slaves. They don’t like being slaves. In fact, they hate being slaves. And so keeping people enslaved is like rowing a boat upstream.
